At St Saviour’s, we recognise that every child has different strengths, abilities and learning needs. We are committed to providing an inclusive education where every child is valued, supported and given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
Our approach follows the principles of the
SEND Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years. We work closely with children, parents and carers, school staff and, where appropriate, external professionals to identify needs, provide appropriate support and monitor progress.
We ensure that children and their parents or carers are involved in discussions about their needs, the support they receive and the outcomes we are working towards. We value their views, knowledge and experiences and use these to inform our planning and provision.
ST SAVIOUR’S SEN DEFINITION
At St Saviour’s School, we firmly believe that every child has the right to a high-quality education. We recognise the diverse needs within our school community and understand that a child’s needs may change over time.
A child or young person has Special Educational Needs (SEN) if they have a learning difficulty or disability that requires special educational provision to be made for them.
Some children may require additional or different support to access learning because:
- They have significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age.
- They have a disability, as defined under the Equality Act 2010, which prevents or hinders them from accessing and benefiting from the educational opportunities generally available to children of the same age.
- They have social, emotional or mental health needs that affect their learning, development or progress.
- They experience barriers to learning that require additional support or intervention.
- They are not making expected progress despite receiving appropriate classroom support and high-quality teaching.
We recognise that SEN can include a range of needs, including communication and interaction, cognition and learning, social, emotional and mental health, and sensory and/or physical needs.
We aim to identify children’s needs at the earliest opportunity and provide appropriate support to help them overcome barriers to learning. We monitor and track the progress of all pupils to ensure that the support and interventions provided are appropriate and effective.
Our Approach to SEN Support
At St Saviour’s, we use a graduated approach to identify and respond to pupils’ additional needs. This follows the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle.
Assess – We identify and assess the pupil’s strengths, needs and any barriers to learning. We consider information from the pupil, parents and carers, teachers and, where appropriate, external professionals.
Plan – We work with the pupil and their parents or carers to identify appropriate outcomes and agree on the support, adjustments and interventions required.
Do – The agreed support and interventions are put into place. Class teachers remain responsible for the day-to-day teaching and provision for pupils with SEN, supported by the SENDCO and other professionals where appropriate.
Review – We regularly review the impact of the support and interventions, monitor progress and identify any changes or further support that may be required.
The Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle is ongoing, and provision is adapted in response to each pupil’s progress and changing needs.
Working with Parents and Carers
We believe that parents and carers play an important role in supporting their child’s education. We encourage regular communication and work closely with families to understand each child’s strengths, needs and aspirations.
Where appropriate, we seek advice and support from external agencies and professionals. This may include specialist teachers, educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, health professionals or other relevant services.
We work collaboratively to ensure that pupils receive appropriate support and that their progress and wellbeing remain at the centre of our approach.
Education, Health and Care Plans
Some pupils require support that is beyond what can ordinarily be provided through SEN Support. In these circumstances, an
Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment may be appropriate.
An EHC Plan sets out a child or young person’s special educational needs and identifies the provision and support required across education, health and social care, where appropriate.
Where a pupil has an EHC Plan, we work closely with the pupil, their parents or carers, the Local Authority and relevant professionals to ensure that the provision outlined in the plan is delivered and reviewed.

We have high expectations for every child and work to remove barriers to learning and participation. We adapt teaching and learning, provide appropriate interventions and make reasonable adjustments where required.
We monitor pupils’ progress and review the effectiveness of the support provided. Our aim is to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to participate fully in school life, develop their skills and achieve their potential.
